Other Side of the World

OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD
If you travel to the other side of the world, from America to Asia, expect some very interesting things are are "equal but opposite."

For example, my home town is cold in the winter and when the wind picks up, we have a chill factor index. So if the actual temperature is -12 degrees, a wind can take this down to -50 degrees.

In Asia close to the tropical zone, the opposite happens. The actual temp may be 70 but the heat index (in the shade) can go up to 80 or more.

Google Backwards Mirror Altered Reality

GOOGLE THE BACKWARDS WORLD OF MIRROR ALTERED REALITY
We know you're just itching to explore another new strange dimensional world. It seems Google has the same idea with its mirror world. Just type in the name "google" backwards into the search engine to bring forth an altered reality.

Once you enter this strange vortex, typing forwards ends up backwards automatically and search results are listed backwards too. The tricks at the screen bottom are not mirrored however.

The real trick is getting out of Google Mirror world. Typing Google, forwards, only ends ups backwards and you're stuck in the Google backwards world. Don't worry, you or your internet, or Google won't get hurt. Just open up a new tab or window and another instance of the search engine will go back to the normal world.

The first thing we noticed on searches is they take longer, so give it some time. Of course when you arrive at the searched site, it's in the normal world.

What can you do when in the mirror? Oddly enough, when trying copy and paste on the backwards text, the result will give a normal text! You could learn how to read backwards. Of course, a screen shot will preserve the strange backwardness.

PGT ET Thought Processor

Quantum Thought for PGTET telescope
FIRST THOUGHT PROCESSOR ADDED TO PGT ET TELESCOPE
Outstripping the limit of imagination and perceivable intuitiveness, the new PGT ET (Paradigmic Genius Telescope Extreme Technology) adds thought to its new arsenal of tools. Where will a telescope with thought lead scientific investigation? What new discoveries will result?

The concept of adding thought to processor machines is nothing new at the lab. The thought processing dimension, then called the fifth dimension, was under development in October of 2012 and announced with the following blog:
http://humanoidolabs.blogspot.tw/2012/10/thought-processing.html

As we know, in the world of the quantum state, the mere act of observing and "thinking" about a process can cause changes and modifications to not only the event and event results but to the world surrounding it. Much of this is counter intuitive to our thinking, however, to harness its capabilities will revolutionize our inventions and applications.

-- Hawking has shown that thought is what validates the Universe --

To advantage the technique, the new PGT ET telescope has now added the dimension of pure thought, to the already existing dims of space and time. Harnessing thought as the added dim and constructing more effective thought processing nodes may become hot topics about ongoing future development for this massive telescope. Some questions asked in the PGT ET program:

How can a thought dim increase the function of the telescope?
Is the telescope now a quantum telescope?
How to construct a thought node?
How can thought modify the telescope's function?
How to operate a telescope with a thought node?
How can the PGT ET telescope incorporate quantum electrodynamics?
What are the boundaries and limitations of the thought function?
How will thought increase the power of the PGT ET?

The Experiment

Our team and a small quantum mechanics experiment
Jeff's unfortunate lab experience
April 1st, 2013

key words: sci-fi, short story, prose, fiction, tongue-in-cheek

The Adventures of  Tom Volt
THE EXPERIMENT

My name is Tom Volt. They call me the boy scientist experimenter as my reputation is all about discovery and exploring new worlds. My parents are dead. They left me their science legacy - all the equipment, knowledge, advanced science labs, wealth and ability to explore the unknown - even though rarely sometimes things go awry, out of control, or lead to startling unexpected results from the dreaded Murphy's Law, which states: "if anything can go wrong, it will."

The hot Quantum Mechanics experiment was set up yesterday by the lab assistant. The weird and unknown worlds of quantum reality are little understood and are definitely counter intuitive to human thinking as we all know. However, we decided to push forward in our quest for knowledge and understanding and wildly and rashly experiment with the mysterious and unknown. What followed was something we never expected!

It wasn't that long ago, growing up, on April 1st, I was awoken to "come quick, look out the window, the aliens have landed!" I burst out of bed looking for the SETI revelation and fled to the window only to be disappointed to see no one had landed. April Fools!!! The joke was on me! Ever since that time I've taken April First with a grain of salt, not expecting anything of worthy magnitude or the unexpected to be of true gains. This philosophy took an unexpected turn this year, as science took on the quantum world with experimentation and a door to a quantum reality.

The team is not normally superstitious but today, everyone advised against continuing due to the day being the notorious April First (April Fools Day), a day for humorous tricks.

It was because on the previous Friday the 13th, another superstition so called ill fated day for accidents, Dr. Robert Brendon, PhD of Temporal-Ultra-Cyberdynamics, activated a space time machine and lost the left side of his body when conducting the Dorg-Fitzinger time travel experiment. Unfortunately, part of his body was metamorphed beyond the spooky entanglement of time and the other portion of his body remained anchored in the Lab.

Now he was nearby watching our experiment, as half man - half machine, fighting to stay alive with every breath, watching our experiment through the foggy plate glass window from inside a kind of cold, dark, massive, wrought Iron Lung machine that supported his time extended existence.

Basically we think one can take steps to open a new door to an alternate dimension world or reality - one that co-exists with our own universe. Keep in mind, all of this is very experimental and speculative, and if one does too much experimenting without prior knowledge of quantum effects, anything can and will happen.

Accidents beyond the mundane, of the weirdest kind can happen. This goes beyond the outer limits of relativity and our world. Plus, we’re dealing with powerful equipment, dangerous atom smashers, hundreds and thousands of times more powerful than the CERN Particle Accelerator, DIY made from incoming high energetic cosmic rays and with difficult to control power of Pi-mesonic-tachyonic templars, anything can go wrong.

Let’s review the events that happened on April first. The apparatus was set to open a quantum door, then enlarge it so that a tiny nano-sized observational "humanoid robot" machine could enter and explore the unknown.

Jeff, the prime lab assistant, set up the ill-fated equipment early in the morning. Now, this is very delicate equipment on the order of nanometers and less in size. Just one bump and the entire experiment could go awry and up in smoke.

Set it, and forget it - apparently that’s what jeff did, a result of his tipsy consumption at the Nobel Prize party the previous night - he voided our cardinal rule, leaving the setup unattended for the rest of the morning.

Little did he know, that morning a Richter-intensive earthquake jolted the lab, upheaving the settings and upsetting the critical positioning of the experimental equipment. This modified the differential spot equations for holding open and expanding the quantum door. The door would now be much larger and have a gravitational pulling effect by errant residual tiny black holes. Murphy’s Law came true… if anything can go wrong, it will!

Myself, and the complete group arrived in the afternoon to conduct and observe the experiment. We set our tiny nano robot to exploration mode and fired up the massive electrodyne machine. The bright glow from copious particle dynamics was immediately apparent as Jeff stoked the fires of quantum resuscilators.

Right on time, according to procedures, he activated all Tuoegenous Fibrulatory Asscuscilation Devices. Powerful high energetic cosmic rays from a massive supernova in deep space were collected and beam focussed. Small calibrations were assumed to be automatic. Smashing took place as particulates and energy packatrons were signatured into oblivitals.

At first, a low hum was heard, followed by a larger alien sound that no one recognized. What was this? Next, a dark matter glow increased with a fair amount of nubrious haze permeating the lab so our vision was limited. We were unaware, as the graviton waves emanated forth, their unexpected intensity began to melt the vital lensing containments.

Next, Jeff activated the magnetic door capitulates to hold open the quantum door for the first time. We held our breath as the nano robo probe microscopically moved toward the new dimension of space and time - a new era in science about to begin, exposed, poised, as we were ready to enter a new world of the unknown. Robert commented, “it's better to have the robot to go through that door rather than us!” We all agreed as the portal began to oscillate and change shape.

Suddenly, due to the discombobulation made by the force of the morning’s earthquake, the quantum door rapidly enlarged much greater than expected. The limiter siren went off, warning lights flashed, buzzers buzzed, as the gravitons kicked-in full force. The door grew uncontrolled, larger and larger in the first minute - and flung open wide - now a full size man could go through. We looked at each other, expecting the unexpected, and Jeff volunteered to enter the void through the door. At that instant, he was flung towards the black hole opening - he gripped the table but it was too late… he was sucked in!

Everyone had previously advised Jeff not to go through the door. We told him, "look what happened to Robert! He lost half his body!" Jeff was not listening - mesmerized by the thoughts of exploring new worlds.

It was unknown what strange erie transformations could result to the limitations of his frail nerdy human body. Jeff was always the one not to listen to anyone. He had rolled up his skinny shirt sleeves and positioned himself directly in front of the heavy Quantal Graviton door locks. That was when something very dire happened.

Unexpected graviton waves captured the mass of Jeff’s puny body, pulling him into the quantum dimension, sucking in his low mass human signature into the powerful gripping warp of time, space, and the unknown. First an arm entered the blinding vortex, next a leg, then we could see the transformation begin in Jeff’s face - a kind of malleable molding and melting, a meld into something hideous, horrendous with a horrifying alien appearance.

His eyes popped out, held there on long silver meniscual lenticular energy strings, and his hair and skin flew out turning to into tiny bubbling scintillation stars. His bone stretched and seemed to lodge under irregular shaped lumps of Crendal Garmathons. The morphing was rapid and there was no return.

Dr. Gifford Holn suggested it looked like Jeff was becoming a state of pure energy. No doubt. As the light increased, so did the horrifying screams, as his body seemed to rip apart, eaten up by something, perhaps the strength of the temporal time excursion, or perhaps the vast forces of physics we could not yet explain - and now Jeff was disembodied, torn apart, molecule by molecule, before our shocked and horrified eyes. Who you gonna call in an event like this?

Team members scrambled to operate the controls and save Jeff, to no avail. The next idea was to pull the plug! But we all knew this was now impossible as the machine was more alien, affixed with protruding crystals and even the oscilloscope was now an alien machine, with a half visible melding frontal display phasing in and out of reality from one world to another.

Jeff’s screams subsided, as he totally vanished, and, as the vari pitched whine of the machine intensified, it threatened to take the other team members - the entire room bent and flexed as if the reality of our word lost a foothold on sensibility. The sound was so loud it was deafening! The size and intensity of the temporal shifts were ultimately humongous and we ran for the Lab door to get out and escape the hideous wrath headed our way, but we didn’t make it there.

Time itself had changed. Dr. Kuiser, standing at the right side of the Lab, who was 90 years old, now reversed in age to 9.  Dr. Tagun, on the left side of the Lab, aged from 30 to 300. The flux of time was changing, shifting, bending, as the quantum door began to rotate and spin, pulsing and growing.

I was the only lucky person, standing in the center of the room, when the eye of the quantum storm hit. No other person escaped the door grips as one by one they all were sucked into the alternate dimension and vanished. Suddenly our power source went dead, and the quantal experiment vanished as everything was being eaten through the quantum reality door. Even the door disappeared.

As I had only one look through the door into the new world, it would change my life forever - the absorption of data impinged into my brain cells and the blazing saturated transfer of new alien and unknown information would occupy my cranial thoughts for a lifetime.

As for the quantum experimentation, other labs repeated the experiment but without the random discombobulate of the earthquake, nothing unusual  happened.

Although many of our well known scientists disappeared, our project was branded "the Bermuda Triangle of Quantum Reality."

DIY Black Hole & Door to Quantum Dimension

Black hole opens up a new world
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN TINY BLACK HOLE AND OPEN A DOOR TO ANOTHER WORLD

CREATE YOUR OWN BLACK HOLE AND BE THE FIRST TO EXPLORE A NEW HIDDEN QUANTUM DIMENSION BEYOND OUR UNIVERSE!

When working in Quantum Mechanics, it becomes possible to think of entering other dimensions as these new worlds can coexist with our own. There are various theories and techniques for the exploration of other dimensions, and opening their doors, however, none are as exciting as the possibilities that small DIY black holes promise. That's because tiny black holes can prove the existence of other dimensions and worlds! The doors they create can be more stable, last longer, and offer larger openings for entering and exploration. Such a new dimension and world may be entangled with the Universe but not as we know it.

— Let's explore some of the precursors to opening up new dimensions and creating our own tiny black hole —

THE SAFETY HOLE
Recent studies have shown that these small black holes can have masses small enough to become a black hole but not large enough to interfere with the Earth. This is because the black hole is small enough for the confinement and containment of gravity and the simultaneous aging and dispersion of energy which follows Einstein's equation E = M C ^2. Think of it more as a point source of energy and a malleable singularity that can be stretched and molded like clay. According to Stephen Hawking, black holes lose mass over time creating Hawking Radiation. This is advantageous as it creates a safeguard decay rate before the black hole can engorge on any substantial amount of matter.

QUANTUM HOLE - MORE THAN BLACK
A microscopic black hole will follow the laws of quantum mechanics. Become well versed in this field to better understand how the hole will function and behave, and how objects entering the quantum dimension will act.

Use a machine like the Quadlyzer Quantum Analyzer or Q Machine to more readily understand the quantum world and quantum mechanics.
The Q Machine
http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/146554-Q-Machine

ENERGY
The tiny black hole is a microscopic one and the energy required to create one is not as much as previously thought. This makes projects like creating tiny black holes possible. How much energy is required to perform such a feat? Use Einstein's equation E = MC^2 once you determine the mass of the tiny black hole. Then use this value for the created potential and kinetic energy created and released in the particle accelerator.

FOLDING DIMENSIONS
The theory of the Universe suggests there is a folding of dimension so that many worlds can reside together and offer connection in ways we have yet to explore or fully understand.

New Universe Theory
http://humanoidolabs.blogspot.com/2012/10/new-universe-theory.html

PARTICLE ACCELERATOR
Build or gain access to a particle accelerator and begin smashing atoms. (see links) Computer simulations have shown it is possible to create one of these black holes using a particle accelerator and some particles that move around the speed of light.

BLACK HOLE DURATION
Use Hawking's equations to determine the life span time of the tiny black hole based on Hawking Radiation and the decay behavior.

PINNING THE ORIFICE
To gain dimensional entrance to the new world, use a technique of pinning the outer perimeter of the orifice using three points. Three smaller black holes can serve this purpose but they must be regenerative to increase their points of longevity. This holds open the aperture long enough to enter.

GOING INTO THE HOLE
An entire person won't be able to fit into the actual microscopic black hole, however a technique can be used to enable the black hole to pin open the doorway to the new dimension, hold it open for fractional time, and send through a microscopic robotic camera to explore the new world. Eventually, we could perfect the development of a tiny nano humanoid to do the initial exploring for us and return to offer data and new discoveries. Nano technology humanoids are the new science field that will be made popular in the future when quantum technology is more developed and explored.

RETURN PATH FROM THE NEW DIMENSION
It will be wise to calculate a return path from the new dimension, however, there is no knowledge currently about what happens with a door to a dimension is open and then closed. It's unknown how to reopen the same door. Therefore initially, the journey into new dimensions will be one way. One valid postulation is to open the door, send in the probe (or step in), do the exploration while keeping the door open and then return. However, currently the time to make these explorations remains infinitesimal.

REGIONAL INFINITESIMAL TEMPORAL ANOMALY
Be concerned about other things like regional infinitesimal temporal anomalies surrounding the black hole (what if tiny things start disappearing in relativistic gravitational time travel).

CREATING DOOR LONGEVITY
A possible way to increase the time span of keeping the door open longer is to generate multiple phasing black holes that appear smoothly one after another.

Controlling Transposition Machines with NDIMS

Big Brain Machine Initiative to Explore Other Worlds
HOW TO CONTROL TRANSPOSITION MACHINES WITH NDIMS
You can power up a massive Transposition Machine and do amazing things with SW to change its guts, configurations and functions. Tune one to create a gate to the Universe! Open doorways to other worlds...

1st Proto QuadLyzer represents Quantum Worlds
The following shows a 3x3 two dimensional matrix. These are easily set with software and hold nine matrix elements.

xxx
xxx
xxx

You can generally fit up to 90,000 of these matrices into a single Transposition Machine. More useful may be the fitting of cube matrices. These three dimensional patterns are sub-machine matrices that can hold more information and content and do more work variety. A 3x3x3 three dimensional matrix will hold 27 elemental nodes. Up to 30,000 are held in a single TM. Matrices can include cubes beginning with the series 1,2,3,... until the TM is filled and reaches capacity.

Example Ndim inside a TM
The project is working on n-dim objects that exceed cubes. Ndims are objects that have additional dimensions attached. Depending on the size of the attached dims, the NDIM will vary in size. NDIMs are limited by the size of the individual dims. One example is a 3.3.3.t.tx which has x.y.z.t.d(tx) defined by space, time and the Integral Calculus rate of change of transforming. The differential equation defines the splay of NDIMS within the TM realm.

6 of these made the first TM
NDIMS can be used to develop apps representing nodes in the Universe and perhaps Quantum nodes in the Quantum world. This allows a single Transposition Machine to transpose a representable Universe section. The size of the TM will determine the size of the representable Universe section or gate. It is projected that gates to the Universe can be created from massive TMs of ultimate size containing significant NDIMs.

Spinoffs may create a Universe Gate
Creating a Universe Gate will be highly useful for understanding not only the Universe doorways but perhaps gaining entrances to the Quantum world. A gained entrance to the QW will enable UDs or Universe Doorways. This topic is briefly discussed in the Quantum Quadlyzer and related blogs.

Quantum Ukulele

ESTABLISHING A QUANTUM UKULELE

Ukulele used for quantum experiments
Effects of a wave form nature can be created, duplicated, and simulated to explore the quantum world using the sound from a musical instrument.

One musical instrument is like a tiny guitar - the Ukulele, which has origins from Hawaii. They are available with four strings in various sizes (soprano, concert, tenor, baritone), generally one of the smallest sizes is called a Soprano. The Soprano Uke obtained for the Big Brain Project is 21-inches long and has a 13.5-inch bridge rating. It resonates with a mahogany wood construct, and is especially well designed for stability and a more humid environment.

The project begins with an acoustical uke and some preparations to convert it into an electronic instrument. The first step is to install a pickup to transfer the sound into an amplifier or computer (or other machine for processing. There are several ways to create an electronic pickup - some work and some will not work with gut strings. Magnetic induction pickups work with metal strings, however a piezo based pickup, which is based on acoustical vibrations, will work. Another method which is quick and simple is to place a directional quality microphone near the resonance aperture. Waves are then captured, and can be recorded, modified, and transformed. Techniques such as capture, transforming, reflecting, modulating and applying effects can have designs and introductions into the system.

String tuning is accomplished with a modern electronic tuner. This is a small electronic battery operated device with a display that shows the key note of the plucked string and the direction to tune it.

It's possible to apply and connect the QuadLyzer and introduce the study of Quantum worlds simulated with the Uke.

Inner Space Era Expanded

BIG BRAIN EXPANDS SPACE EXPLORATION
INNER SPACE ERA EXPANDED
This is the era of grand exploration of inner space found inside a chip, notably the Parallax Propeller chip. Inner Space is a broad category and is now expanded beyond the microscopic to include mesoscopic, nanoscopic, and the quantum world.

OK, so you think you're a little bored with this topic? Think again. We believe it's possible to create a tiny door opening to another dimension of the Quantum world and peer inside to see back to the temporal edge of our Universe, at the beginning of relativistic space and time. MESOSCOPIC SPACE
There is no rigid definition for mesoscopic physics, but the systems studied are normally in the range of 100 nm (the size of a typical virus) to 1 000 nm (the size of a typical bacterium). 100 nanometers is the approximate upper limit for a nanoparticle. (Mesoscopic Space does not yet appear on the Big Brain Space Exploration Chart, although space exploration overlaps this region.)

MICROSCOPIC SPACE
Thus far, the Big Brain projects and programs have studied the microscopic, created a powerful microscope, explored the inside Cog City of a Propeller chip, and viewed things at the molecular level.

BIG PROPELLER-CHIP BRAIN SPACE EXPLORATION
BIG BRAIN CREATES QUANTUM WORLDS DIVISION FOR STUDY OF QUANTUM  SPACE

The Big Brain has formed the Quantum Space Division, i.e. The Quantum Worlds Exploration Division, which will explore strange new worlds that exist beyond the microscopic space end of the size spectrum. The project will explore perplexing "quantum world things" that traverse past the increasingly small realm of nanotechnology, and zoom deep down within the embedded and perhaps limitless infinitely shrinking zonal space of the ultimately weird and not-understood Quantum Effects.

According to research sources, i.e. Quantum Reflection

The purpose is to create a platform for exploring the phenomenon of quantum reflection, taking and applying Quantum Reflection to a level incorporating added dimensional Quanta and to theoretically represent their predicted or simulated behaviors and effects.

TOOLS
Even when dealing with the theoretical, special research tools are required for experimentation, simulation and investigation of various scientific principles. For this reason, the QuadLyzer was invented and built.

Quantum Reflection
university.iosonofabio.fastmail.fm/talks/Quantum_Reflection.pdf

Quantum reflection is a classically counter intuitive phenomenon whereby the motion of particles is reverted "against the force" acting on them. This effect manifests the wave nature of particles and influences collisions of ultra-cold atoms and interaction of atoms with solid surfaces.

Quantum reflection of cold atoms from surfaces occurs on the attractive tails of long-range atom surface potentials, and takes place at mesoscopic distances on the order of a fraction of a micron.

Because of that, studies of quantum reflection are closely related to studies of the long-range atom-surface interactions and contribute to our understanding of the interface between quantum world and the macroscopic world in general.

Observation of quantum reflection has become possible thanks to recent advances in trapping and cooling atoms. Utilization of this effect has only begun and holds many exciting promises. The goal of the workshop is to present the recent results and applications of quantum reflection in the areas of atomic, molecular, optical and surface physics, and to discuss its potential for science and technology, notably for the understanding of quantum mechanics, for realization of experiments testing quantum electrodynamics and gravity, and for applications in the fields of quantum optics and nanotechnology.

Institute for Theoretical Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics
http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/itamp/

MESOSCOPIC
Mesoscopic physics is a sub-discipline of condensed matter physics which deals with materials of an intermediate length scale. The scale of such materials can be described as being between the size of a quantity of atoms (such as a molecule) and of materials measuring micrometers. The lower limit can also be defined as being the size of individual atoms. At the micrometer level are bulk materials. Mesoscopic and macroscopic objects have in common that they both contain a large number of atoms. Whereas average properties derived from its constituent materials describe macroscopic objects, as they usually obey the laws of classical mechanics, a mesoscopic object, by contrast, is affected by fluctuations around the average, and is subject to quantum mechanics.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoscopic_physics

In other words, a macroscopic device, when scaled down to a meso-size, starts revealing quantum mechanical properties. For example, at the macroscopic level the conductance of a wire increases continuously with its diameter. However, at the mesoscopic level, the wire's conductance is quantized - the increases occur in discrete, or individual, whole steps. During research, mesoscopic devices are constructed, measured, and observed experimentally and theoretically in order to advance understanding of the physics of insulators, semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. The applied science of mesoscopic physics deals with the potential of building nano-devices.

SIZE OF MESOSCOPIC

There is no rigid definition for mesoscopic physics, but the systems studied are normally in the range of 100 nm (the size of a typical virus) to 1 000 nm (the size of a typical bacterium). 100 nanometers is the approximate upper limit for a nanoparticle.

Quantum mechanics basically takes the wave mechanics of classical physics and applies it to individual particles. There are a few differences that crop up when you do this, but I think the main concept here carries over pretty well-- the concept of interference. In classical wave mechanics, we have Huygens' principle, which says that every part of a wave acts like sources for how the wave evolves forward in time. Also, we have the "superposition principle", which says that every solution to the wave equation that comes from one source just adds up with the solutions that come from all other sources. This means in classical waves, the waves get a high total amplitude wherever there is constructive interference, and low total amplitude wherever there is destructive interference.

SUPERPOSITION PRICIPLE

In quantum mechanics, we also have a superposition principle, except now it applies to individual particles. It basically says that anything that we can describe as something that can happen to an individual particle can happen in superposition, so what 'actually happens" is a kind of constructive sum over all these "possible happenings." This is the spirit of the Feynman path integral approach, for example. So using this mathematics, what has a high probability of happening is what receives constructive interference over this sum, and what has low probability is what destructively interferes. This is a key point-- each individual term in the sum starts out equally likely, even ones that correspond to absurd behavior, but the absurd behaviors cancel each other out, sort of like monkeys voting in an election.

In the case of reflection, we find that the presence of the mirror allows a certain behavior to receive constructive interference, which would not if the mirror were not there. The new behavior is "angle of incidence equals angle of reflection", and the mathematical property of that type of solution is that it exhibits "stationary phase." Stationary phase means the phase of the type of process (so how quickly the amplitude of the process varies over the set of very similar processes) is not varying over the physically allowed process, but does vary rapidly as soon as you test a non-physical process. Thus, the "angle of incidence equals angle of reflection" gives an extremum in the phase as you vary over a range of possible processes-- in this case, it is the minimum time to get between specified points A and B. Without the mirror, the only minimum time is the straight line between them. With the mirror, a second possibility emerges, the local minimum in time that comes from an equal angle of incidence and angle of reflection path between A and B that glances off the mirror. (It takes more time than the straight shot, but less time than all its neighboring paths, so it exhibits stationary phase and so constructive interference when you add the neighboring amplitudes.)

This still doesn't answer what the mirror is doing that allows for this new stationary phase solution. The classical answer to that is that the mirror acts like a source of waves that cancel the incident wave within the mirror, and constructively interfere to make a reflected wave. Quantum mechanically, the mirror creates a boundary condition on the photon wave function that forces the wave function to go to zero at the surface of the mirror, and this constraint suffices to give the reflected wave when you apply the superposition of wave functions analyzed in terms of all the modes that obey that constraint and have the energy of the incident wave. You could even do it with quantum field theory, and one way to picture that would be to say that the incident photon is destroyed by the mirror, but its energy must be accounted for, and since the mirror is elastic, it must use the energy to promote a "virtual photon" to the status of a real photon. What's more, the virtual photon not only has to have the energy of the original photon, it must also have a wave function that resonates constructively with the original photon-- in other words, it is indistinguishable from the original photon, so is ruled by the same wave function, and that wave function must experience constructive interferece (for all the above reasons) to have a reasonable probability of actually happening.

So you may be surprised to find there is not just one answer to your question, and there might be new possible answers in a few more centuries, but the key idea is constructive interference set up by the way the mirror is required to prevent the photon from crossing its flat surface, yet energy is also required to be conserved. Generally, we're happy if we have one way to think about it that gives good results and seems simple enough for us to understand.

Counter-Intuitive the Laws of Quantum Physics
Researchers at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin report on the observation of a text-book quantum effect that nicely reveals how counter-intuitive the laws of quantum physics can be. Considering only classical mechanics, a particle moving towards a cliff would, inevitably, fall over (and down) the cliff wall, simply because the force is acting in this direction. In stark contrast, the wave-particle-duality of quantum physics allows for a particle (e.g., an atom or molecule) to bounce back from the edge of the cliff unscathed. This is known as quantum reflection and is responsible for the observation of non-destructive reflection of the weakest bound molecule known, the helium dimer, from a reflection grating. The findings have been published in the journal Science.

Artist’s view of quantum reflection of a diatomic helium molecule in front of a solid surface. The attractive force between the surface and the helium dimer (van-der-Waals force) forms a deep canyon in front of the hard wall. The helium dimer survives this impact, because the dimer actually never comes into this canyon but bounces off the edge of the cliff.
