Robot Explorer Log 8 Wireless Camera

The complete wireless camera system for Robot Explorer produces the first color image in this setup test at the lab. The completed system will contain the battery supply, camera and transmitter on the robot carriage. The TV and receiver will locate at the base tracking station. The tracking station will include channels for picture and telemetry, along with a sound channel. As seen clockwise, the TV, camera, 1.2 GHz transmitter, battery pack and 1.2 GHz receiver.
A WIRELESS CAMERA SYSTEM
FOR ROBOT EXPLORER - Log 8

Robot Explorer is a new space robot designed under the Big Brain Initiative at Humanoido Labs, to explore new worlds at the outer fringes of the solar system.

One of the most important parts of the robotics system is the wireless camera. The camera will transmit live images from the surface of the planet or moon on its own channel and allow humans to watch as the robot explores a new world.

OVERVIEW
It took three months to design and gather all the parts necessary to build the wireless camera system for the Robot Explorer prototype. This system sends a TV color image by a 1.2 GHz frequency signal up to a long range base station, located up to 1,000 meters (.63 mile) in distance. The signal reaches the receiver, is decoded into the A/V NTSC composite 1V pp format and is fed to the TV's A/V input jack.

Specification page for the SONY CCD
WIRELESS CAMERA SYSTEM
The system consists of a miniature camera, camera image transmitter, camera and transmitter battery power pack, receiver and TV monitor. The TV monitor and receiver are located at the tracking station and the other parts remain within the robot. The modules are made in Taiwan. The units are prewired at the store by the store owner. It's apparent, the harness combines the battery plug with both transmitter and camera. The store owner wired the battery pack, which was purchased from another store, and provided the required power barrel end plug. Purchasing the system at the A/V store provided extra service, i.e. the entire system was wired, set up and tested. The other benefit, this is a take home system with no waiting for shipment for an unknown "working or not working" package that would require some assembly.

POSITIONING
The camera, battery pack, and transmitter are located on the robot. The receiver and TV are located at the tracking and telemetry station.

PURCHASING
The system was purchased locally at the A/V parts store. The owner provided service for putting the system together and testing it. He also wired the battery pack (purchased from another store), provided the power barrel jack, and tested it at no additional charge. Information is gathered from the store owner and a variety of sources.

MEASURING THE TRANSMITTER
The camera 1.2 GHz transmitter was measured with a frequency meter and actual respective channel frequencies were 1080, 1120, 1160 and 1200 Mhz.

COST IN NT$
$1,700 for the camera
$1,200 for the camera transmitter

Even if the cable looks good with shrink wrap covering the connection, it's likely the two wires were only twisted together and not soldered. If an intermittent open connection occurs, it will not be surprising. Just strip the tubing and wiring, add new tubing, solder it together and shrink the tubing.

Lock Your Bike - Ebike Security

A keyed Padlock represents one method of locking
HOW SECURE IS YOUR EBIKE?

A NEW GUIDE: HOW TO LOCK AND PROTECT YOUR MODERN BIKE

You've spent anywhere from US$1,000 to $5,000 for your electronic motorized bike and now you need to park it somewhere. You park it and lock it, but when you return a few hours later, there's nothing there! Shock & Horror!

http://humanoidolabs.blogspot.tw/2013/02/electric-bike.html

As the numbers of Ebikes increase due to popularity, so does the number of theft incidences. Law enforcement has no solution and often has no emphasis on bike theft crime prevention. What can be done about this concerning problem of theft in society?

A variety of lock choices including DIY chain, padlock, ubolts, steel woven cables

Spend a day researching the challenge of safely locking a bike to deter crime and one will discover that all methods of locking up a bike can be defeated by a professional thief. So what's the answer to preventing bike theft?

THE PLAN
First, you won't need to do 100% of the things to protect your bike. Maybe 90% will do. We'll provide some pattern plans for protection in most situations against the average thief. Nothing is 100% secure, however, by adding 90% protection, the odds of having the bike stolen can be reduced.

DETERMINE BEST TRANSPORTATION MODE
There are times when you will want to forgo the bike and walk to a nearby store, take the MRT to a far away distance, go by train on a trip, go on a family outing by car, or take the bus. Use the bike when the situation is best for the bike. This is when you can keep the bike in your sight, withing hearing distance with a bike alarm, or when the bike will be locked to a solid object and you will be away for a few minutes. You may also use the bike when perhaps the bike will not be parked, as when riding with a friend, or sight seeing.

NEW & UNIQUE BIKE
You may want to buy a new and unique bike which has parts not compatible with other bikes. This will make the bike less desirable for resale. Plus, the resale of such a bike would be an outstanding target.
Woven cable locks the front wheel to chassis or post

BIKE ONLY GOES IN A CIRCLE
No one will ride away with the bike when the front wheel is turned 90-degrees and locked into position. This will cause the bike to go in a circle, if it could move.

PICK UP AND WALK AWAY
There are several locking techniques to perhaps reduce the chances of a bike being stolen, but none of these are 100% safe for the bike. The bike can be protected from an average person picking it up and walking away with it. But the fact of this matter is that a professional thief can use tools to defeat any locking system. However, one can slow down a thief.
A Chinese Ubolt that disassembles
It's not easy to pick up the Ebike and walk very far with it due to its heavy weight. Much of this weight is from the battery. Lead acid batteries will add more weight over Lithium batteries. If the battery is removed to reduce the value of the bike, the bike will be easier to pick up and walk away with it, however, it will also have lower value. Weight is not a 100% deterrent as a thief can drive up his van and simply stow the bike, even with all the locks on. The bike can be chained to metal post or pole but the chain needs to be of tractor strength and this will only slow down the process of defeating the lock.

EYES ON TARGET
The method here is to lock both wheels of the bike outside and keep your eyes on it at all times. How is this possible? A roadside restaurant has windows, for example. Watch for any suspicious activity by your bike, especially someone pretending to talk on a cell phone and standing nearby.

LOCK EVERYTHING
To a thief, every little item represents cash and stripping your bike of anything puts cash in his pocket. A bike seat can easily cost $30 and up, so lock it down. The handlebar set may be a gold mine with a motor throttle, controller, two brake hand calipers, cables, bell, grips, mirror, basket and other accessories. The photo shows how a woven steel cable can be threaded through the seat to lock it down. The other end of the cable threads through the rear wheel. Choose the largest shank that will still fit through the seat's metal anchor. We recommend a keyed locking cable as the combination lock may be the easiest to defeat without any tools.

DO NOT PARK IT AT NIGHT
Parking a bike somewhere overnight gives the thief a longer period of time to make plans on stealing the bike, and the cover of the night to achieve it.

FIND A SECURITY CAMERA
Park your bike directly by the security camera so if the bike is stolen, there will be image records available doing the stealing.

ROTATE THE PARKING POSITION
Do not lock the bike in the same place all the time. Change locations to prevent thieves from observing and catching on to your routine.

FIND RELIABLE EYES
Become a regular at a local business and ask the workers there to keep a casual eye on your bike whenever it’s locked out front.

KEEP AWAY FROM THE CURB
Protect your bike from street cleaners, buses, and careless drivers by locking it a few feet away from the curb. Position the bike on the sidewalk side of signposts with the wheels parallel to the gutter to avoid bike mangling.

DO NOT PARK IT AT THE STATION
Do not park a bike at the MRT, Subway, Train Station, Bus Station, Museum, Theater, School, or other similar place - it's like a red flag signaling the bike will be available for some time.

USE REMOVABLE ACCESSORIES
You can strip the bike rather than the thief. Most popular accessories are now made for removal. Choose accessories with mounts that allow device removal and stow in your carry-with-you bag.

Giant's Ubolt has a bike mount and extra long shank
TAKE THE BATTERY WITH YOU
The battery often costs as much as half the bike cost. It can be removed to lower the value of the bike. It's unlikely a thief will pay an additional $400 to $600 for a battery to make the bike usable. Take it with you - the battery is usually metal peg locked into place when the key is removed. However, the metal peg simply slides into a piece of battery casing plastic, thus negating most of its secure feature. You probably won't want to carry around a lead acid battery. Keep it on the bike to give it massive weight. Based on the weight of batteries, lead acid is so heavy that one would probably not remove it or carry it. A Lithium battery is lighter weight and more practical for the removal and carry approach.

REGISTER YOUR BIKE
The bike register is designed to alert others to a stolen bike and have access to a data base of necessary information to return it to its proper owner.

ENGRAVE YOUR BIKE
Metal engraving your own name or identification on the underside and painting over it so it's still visible to you, will help you identify your bike should you see it somewhere.

MAKE THE BIKE UNIQUE
Painting a color strip on the bike will make it identifiable and unique. The stripe cannot be easily removed during the time of theft and the bike will likely need a repaint job by the thief, making this is another deterrent.

KEEP IT WITH YOU
Strange as it may seem, it's possible to keep the bike with you in some situations. While shopping at the grocery store, a young man was seen walking through the isles shopping with his bike. As he rolled it along, it looked like a very expensive racer bike, one in which he would not let out of his touch.

EARS ON TARGET - BIKE ALARM
Use a bike alarm. There are several types. One will sound a loud decibel alarm by detecting vibrations. Another type will switch on automatically when the lock has tampering. It is hoped the loud sound will slow down a thief. However, the real use of the alarm is when the bike owner can hear it.

MAKE IT OLD
This is a very popular technique in some areas of China and Taiwan where owners will take a can of flat black spray paint and spot paint the new bike to make it look old and blend it in with other old black bikes. However, the owner of a new bike may be against doing this. There are many debates about this at bike Forums.

RUBBER INNER TUBE IT
You can age a bike by cutting up an old inner tube and wrapping the new bike with it. Secure the tube with plastic ties.

LOCK TYPES
There are numerous locks but can be summarized into three categories.

1) U-Bolt
2) Chain & Padlock
4) Steel Cable Weave A) Flat Key Lock
B) Round Key Lock
C) Combination Lock

One of the strongest Chinese Ubolt locks
OPENING LOCKS
Choose quality locks that are not so easy to defeat. It helps to have a lock that takes longer to defeat. Consult the web for this type of information. It's a little shocking to discover some of these locks sell for $1,000 to $3,000 dollars. In public, probably the thief would find it easier to cut the post or the chain rather than the lock.

SLOWING DOWN A THIEF
A thief can be slowed a bit by locking the bike with several different locks, each having a different locking system. This forces the thief to use and carry more than one tool. It is hoped that the extra work will make the thief pass over the bike.

ULTIMATE GPS SYSTEM
It may be possible to hide a built in GPS tranmitter system and follow your bike should it be stolen. The GPS may be hidden in the seat or stowed in a frame tube.

THE BEST PROTECTION
The best protection is to not leave your bike somewhere accessible to thieves.

LOCKS OFF
Do not lock to hand rails as people with disabilities and the elderly depend on these being non-obstructed. It may be illegal to lock a bike to a parking meter in some locations.

LOCKS ON
Th following may be potential places to anchor a bike:

Bike Rack
High Post
Fence
Sign Post
Tree
Utility Pole

MODIFY YOUR NUTS
A bike often has its handle bars, brakes, seat and other parts attached with a simple hex nut that any old allen wrench can fit for quick removal. The nuts can be replaced with something like Zorx nuts that require a more exotic wrench to remove. It's more unlikely a thief will carry exotic tools around.

LOCK IT AT HOME
Keep the bike locked in the garage, in your yard, in a storage shed, and in your apartment.

Robot Fist & Brain Stub

THE 1ST MACHINE ROBOT RED FIST
Rare boxing glove creates 1st robot fist

An interesting take on robot arms is the new Red Robot Fist. The Fist needs only one degree of freedom to activate and carry through its striking potential. It serves as a test for machine output ports and as a machine security device on the latest line of Propeller Super Computing Machines.

SOURCE  The red Fist was purchased at the mystical Night Market of Red China and is a small stitched and padded boxing glove designed to manually strike the body repeatedly to impart enough force to help increase circulation. Such strikers come in all sorts of sizes, shapes and promotions. This one is very interesting, and rather rare among the cache.

MECHANISM  The boxing glove is mounted to a straight wooden arm with a ball mount at both ends. The fist has the most simple actuator using a single servo activated via one Propeller port. Activation temporary moves a catch to release the "spring" cocked fist. The fist then forcefully moves as needed. With two configuration designs, one releases the fist so that it traverses at least a 90-degree arch. The 2nd configuration launches the fist much like a rocket, in a straight line of motion like an arrow, using a launching tube and a compressor spring. This borrows (and adds) some technology from the Big Brain's Micro Space Program. However, instead of using compressed air fuel, the energy comes mechanically from the cocked mechanism and spring. The spring is either a pull spring or a compression spring found in the parts bin.

USES  The Fist is an experimental platform for testing many output ports and pins, and for acting as and testing a new security device. It's a novel approach by concept, as the boxing glove and its softness is a relatively benign system. Though relatively harmless with mild forces, a stronger spring and latch mechanism can indeed pack a wallop!

ROBOTIC BRAINS  Robot brains with arms, fists, fingers, and internal transforming and signaling agents, both electronic and mechanical, are relatively new concepts being explored.

SERVO & PROGRAMMING The servo is a standard Parallax servo with the activating program code taken from the Parallax OBEX. Propeller programming is in SPIN.

PORTING  The device is easily ported from one machine to another and two such devices can make a nice set of arms with a single minded purpose of security.

ORIGINS  The Red FIST has its basis and idea from the Big Brain Stub, designed July 7th, 2011 and as presented here from the original post. seen below..

Designing a Big Robotic Brain Stub
(from July 7th, 2011)
Discovery post

http://forums.parallax.com/showthrea...l=1#post982979

The study and design of Brain Stubs is progressing. The project will also require, in addition to technical merit, some art and imagination. Unfortunately there were no suggestions for the shape of a Brain Stub so the project is progressing slowly. Apparently the right side of the gray matter is mute.

The Investigation

The investigation begins with weight and mass. Since the stub will be servo driven with props, it must not have too much mass. Although Wonder-Board is extremely light weight, it still has mass under consideration and appreciable weight in large sizes at various extended positions.

Determining Mass and weight

Both are determined by shape, and shape must adhere to the requirements set in the previous Brain Stub post. For mass, the formula F = (M)(A) is utilized. The servo has ramping and can therefore control inertia.

Control

Control will be under the Brain Stem as previously planned. This allows many functions of programming for the servo(s).

DOF

Now under consideration are two degrees of freedom but it is not known where these will locate. Enough parts exist to do 2 DOF and this is in compliance with the Brain Stem. The board can immediately handle 2 servos.

Brain Stub Design

This week the trial period was up on the CAD design program. Today, the program was purchased and the Brain Stub design can resume.

Quantity of Stubs

Do we go with a quantity of redundant Octopus-like stubs or could the Brain could get by with one stub? Two stubs open up some possibility of grasping. One stub would be faster, cheaper, lighter, and easier to construct. It would consume less power, and remain easier to program.

Stub Focus

Focus is now on designing the shape of one Brain Stub.

Hardware

The current idea is to use a PING))) kit for the interface connection to a constructed Wonder-Board Giant Brain Arm run by the large servo.

Dimensions

It's possible the Giant Brain Stub Arm could be 4-feet long and 1 or 2 feet in diameter. This is however subjective until the design is more solidified.

Shape

The shape is estimated to be grotesquely large, overbearing, ungainly, shocking, and with an appearance never before seen. It could have a very large hand at the end of the arm. But the hand would not be fully articulated. It must however meet the minimal requirements set forth in the previous Brain Stub post.

Servos

Should these servos mount standard or should they be continuous rotation servos? Maybe one of each - the large had could continuously rotate at the wrist (for some special functions) while the globby arm could dangle in varying degrees at the lumpy shoulder.

Possible Conclusions & Suggestions
  • A single Brain Stub
  • A blobbed shape never before seen
  • Made from manufactured WonderBoard
  • Interfaced with Parallax PING)))
  • Two degrees of freedom
  • Servo driven
  • A massively large hand
  • Side mounted
  • Articulation at the shoulder or elbow
  • Articulation at the hand wrist
  • Extremely large overall size ~ Four Foot extent
  • Grotesquely appearing
  • Light weight to minimize inertia
  • Programmed/Operated by the Brain Stem
  • Employing one continuous rotation servo at the hand wrist
  • One standard servo at the shoulder or elbow

QUESTION & ANSWER SECTION (New)
We've opened up a new Question and Answer section that can be applied to posts. Click on contact and send your questions. Negative responses will be rejected. Constructive comments may be included with the project.

The first question comes from nThinker. Q - Can the Red Fist install on the SuperTronic Brain? A - Yes, it can install on most platforms with software for controlling a servo, but is specifically designed for a Propeller chip so it runs well on Supertronic ports or any of the Big Brain series and Propeller projects with an available pin.

    Big Brain Air Travel Consolidation

    BIG BRAIN EXOSKELETON XRAY
    BIG BRAIN PASSED AIRPORT SCANNERS
THESE 20 PPPB'S PASSED AIRPORT SECURITY
    BIG BRAIN BEAST
    TRAVELS BY AIR FOR CONSOLIDATION
    AND FACES AIRPORT SECURITY

    HOW WAS IT ACCOMPLISHED?
Today the Big Propeller Brain successfully completed its final round journey of air travel for the Consolidation Program to reassemble in one location, thereby bringing all modules together for a more powerful living machine.

Your Worst Nightmare? But how do you take the beast from the cradle and pass it through the ultimately tough and sometimes ruthless regime of Airport Security? Just look at one scenario - armed guards with machines guns, vicious attack and "something sniffing" police dogs, impatient wild card people in menacing uniforms making unreasonable judgements with authority to make you bend over backwards, laws not necessarily beneficial to your luggage or the value of your personal effects, and damaging XRAY Radiation machines harmfully accumulative to health. What madness! Even babies can be indited, flight banned and ear tagged as terrorists in a system that readily and easily makes horrendous mistakes that make you the brunt of the consequences.

Wearing white gloves, they reach for ultimate unspoken levels of frisking your body in private places, meanwhile you endure the ultimately high levels of stress that's generated in going through these nightmare check points. In fact, they poke, prod, upset your luggage, go through your underwear, confiscate what they want, and upset you. They invade your privacy, take your photos, make your personal information available, and even take your temperature! They own you and all your personal property and they know there's no timely expeditious alternative to air flight. Your stuck.

To  make matters worse, trying to take something unusual out of or through a Communist Nation can make matters prohibitively complicated and harrowing. Will you be brought up on charges and serve out your life's remainder in confinement waiting for the rope? New Propeller technology, hundreds of processors, thousands of wires, towering electronic microprocessor boards - stuff that looks like a giant big blue bomb, and literally everything that may not be allowed out of the country will make you sweat bullets! It becomes your worst nightmare.

The BIG BRAIN Exo is capable of dreaming and life
but can it pass the Xray machine at Airport Security?
    Air Travel
Air travel is always a concern. Imagine, if you will, the Big Brain with hundreds of processor chips and wire bundles and it's easily to dream up the shape of something not allowed on planes, not to mention the startling image of what appears on the Airport Security luggage Xray machine!

    Previously
Last time we shipped the flat Arrays, fully populated solderless breadboards with a massive number of Parallax Propeller chips installed. This core of the Big Brain was challenged by Airport Security and was ported to a special luggage area for inspection and additional Xrays. It took only one word to go through. Read about the process at the Airport Security post.

    New Low Weight Requirements
This time it went smoother than the last time. No questions asked. No special porting over for additional exams. The only confrontation was the overweight situation created by the luggage. New international regulations stipulate no more than 23kg for check through luggage. Considering the added weight of the actual empty luggage, which must be the strong sturdy rigid style to avoid side depressions during handling, it does not leave much weight allowance for the Big Brain, components and its massive power supply.

    What went through
This time the Big Brain's EXO and massive power supply was shipped to the Main Lab. The EXO is a towering Exoskeleton with the components mounted on the outside of the structure. This facilitates rapid wiring and changes, and it offers an easy to see working environment. The down side is the wires are exposed on the outside and can easily tear off.

Brain Parts Scattered Across the Universe?
Brain parts were also shipped but not through air travel during the flight due to luggage quantity restrictions. A courier was hired to ship six boxes of parts and components by air freight. Also included were supporting projects, lab equipment, vessels, documentation and peripherals.

    Prepping the Brain for Travel
The luggage was first prepared as a bed to hold the EXO. A carpet with rubber backing was placed to line the luggage interior. Fabric was then used to cushion and support the brain on all sides. The fabric, soft cotton material, is capable of compression and absorbing impact without damaging the Brain. It's a good idea to put the heavy weight power supply into matching luggage, locating it at the two luggage La Grange points - this is in the range of the opposite side of each handle. Typically luggage will have one handle at the top and one at the side.

It's Only a Matter of Money
Get out your green stuff, or red matter if you're in China. As they say, it's only a matter of money - you simply supply the airline attendant with the appropriate bargained sum of money and away you go, no further business required.

    Frequent Fat Flyer FFF
If you're really fat (lots of overweight luggage) or a Frequent Fat Flyer FFF (fly often with overweight luggage) you may even get a discount.

    Consolidation Program
We're really happy the final components of the Big Brain arrived safely at the new laboratory and in the next several months a project will be initiated to reconnect and rewire the Big Brain in a new, even more powerful, configuration with the Consolidation Program.

    Definitions
Consolidation Program - a project to bring together all Big Brain components, parts, modules, assemblies, and offspring in one place, and to reassemble with the goal of a more powerful and readily accessed unit.

    Big Brain Survives Airport Security

It took 6 pieces of luggage to ship part of the Big Brain
    SURVIVING AIRPORT SECURITY
Airport Security, I'm telling you, it's not a bomb!!!

The Left Brain and the Right Brain sections were taken through airport security yesterday. There was some concern about both sections. The right brain was packaged inside an oversized box and created overweight while not fitting any of the specifications of a carry on item. The left brain looked like a bomb with its Propeller arrays of wired boards!

After some bargaining with airport managers, and the offering of money, the right brain in the oversized and overweight box was allowed on the plane as a carry on. This was good luck and undoubtedly due to to some bargaining finesse, and money. Inside the jet aircraft, the Boeing 747 was retrofitted with some very large overhead luggage compartments and the Big Right Brain box fit in just fine.

Next up, the left brain, which was packed into a large brown taped box, was taken specifically to special airport operations check in which is located at a separate location from regular check through luggage, where it was x-rayed for content. I was worried sick. All those arrays and wires and chips and metal contact points from the many large solderless breadboards would certainly bring forth alarms. Fears being allayed, Airport security simply said "Data?" The reply was "yes." ... and it went through... (Sometimes the more agreeable you can be and the less you say are your greatest assets.)

Upon arrival at destination, the Big Left Brain brown "Data" box promptly appeared on the luggage carrousel, thus alleviating a lot of worry about the safety and transport of the Big Brain. Many of the smaller Big Brain siblings (children) were packed in the standard check through luggage and these went through fine, with no questions asked.
